    Opportunity: HPC Linux Systems Administrator (#46209) @ SRA International -- Rockville, MD (US)

    BACKGROUND

    SRA is seeking an innovative, dedicated, and highly-motivated High Performance Computing (HPC) Engineer to solve challenging problems for our client, the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a scientific and medical research agency. If working with a 1000+ core HPC cluster, extensively automating the data center from bare-metal provisioning to application deployments, and creating scalable and high performance solutions sounds interesting to you, then please apply.

    This position with SRA is part of a 7 person team supporting Linux and HPC; and works within a larger IT infrastructure and software development program in support of NIAID. The environment is currently a small but growing cluster made up of about 70 physical nodes and 300 TB of data, primarily focusing on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). As the needs of the NIAID Scientists evolve, we continue to expand our design and cluster, adding more nodes and memory. Sr Engineers on the team will interact with NIAID Scientists to answer questions, troubleshoot issues, and build relationships; helping them to better utilize the cluster as a resource. Position is for full time employment with SRA and will be based at our client's office currently in Bethesda MD and soon moving 10 minutes away to Rockville MD off Fishers Ln (metro accessible and parking available; part time teleworking 1 day a week is allowed)

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The High Performance Computing (HPC) Engineer will
    • Perform architecture design and day-to -day operational maintenance, support and upgrades for Linux operating systems, and servers. Platforms to be supported include Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS and Linux-based security appliances.
    • Develop and implement innovative and complex solutions, ensuring that upgrades and changes comply with established guidelines and processes.
    • Further develop and execute High Performance Computing solutions using cluster/grid technologies.
    • Serve as a senior member of the team responsible for the planning and development of a robust and scalable management infrastructure for Linux computing resources.
    • Apply in-depth HPC and Linux expertise to collaborate with stakeholders across IT and domain disciplines to expand HPC use in support of world class, cutting-edge scientific research.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • BS/BA degree and 6 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Experience with Linux/Unix variants, (RedHat/RHEL and its derivatives is desired)
    • Scripting skill of some sort (Perl, Python, Ruby, bash, etc)
    • Familiarity with industry best practices for Linux server security; ability to implement organizational security standards on Linux platforms
    • Experience with automation/configuration management (such as one of the following: Chef, Puppet, Ansible, etc.)
    • HPC administration experience
    • SAN/NAS hardware experience is required (experience with NetApp and DDN tools is preferred)

    PREFERENCES

    • HPC Administration experience, more specifically Grid Engine experience (in any variant) and GPFS
    • Strong troubleshooting skills
    • KVM/VMware administration and deployment experience
    • Comfortable with administering Apache and MySQL in traditional LAMP stack deployments
    • Working knowledge of popular bioinformatics applications and experience installing and configuring within a cluster
    • Infiniband administration experience
    • Experience with technical evaluation and recommendation of new technologies strongly preferred
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead technical project
    • Skilled in coordinating efforts between disciplines and across organizational boundaries
    • Must be able to analyze solutions components, understand systems integration challenges, and identify technology gaps in current components that must be resolved to reach future performance targets and functionality requirements.
    • Enterprise backup software experience (especially IBM TSM and/or CommVault Simpana)
    • Knowledge of high performance enterprise storage systems
    • Enjoys working in a collaborative, team environment
    • Good documentation skills
    • Able to clearly present ideas to both technical and non-technical users and staff
