Dear All,

Many thanks for the many wonderful photos you sent in. I'm still hard
at work on moving all packages etc. to the imminent LTS release of
Ubuntu to create Bio-Linux 8, but today was the day I had the fun task
of choosing a new default background image. I took a selection of my
favourite images, trimmed them to the right proportions, and added a
Bio-Linux logo. I looked for images that seemed to make a good backdrop
(honourable mention for Bas's Natterjack Toad - it looks lovely but the
unblinking stare is just too much!). Then I rounded up a group of CEH
colleagues as an impartial judging panel and showed them a slideshow to
find which was best and to decide a winner.

Unfortunately this didn't work very well. Everyone liked different
pictures. So, I went to plan B...

I have made a little CRON job that cycles the image on a weekly basis,
so that users can see a different image each week. For the technically
inclined, I'm just doing this by switching a symlink so it shouldn't
upset anyone who doesn't want this feature and changes their wallpaper
to something else.

I will credit all of you photographers on the Bio-Linux 8 website when
it goes live, and also in the Bio-Linux release announcement. I'll
indicate that all pictures are licensed CC-BY
(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/) unless you tell me otherwise now.

Thanks again,

TIM
