SGE supports 3 levels of checkpointing --

1. kernel level -- OS provides built-in support
2. user-level   -- the object files link against the
                   special library that provides
                   checkpointing support
3. application level -- some applications, like
                   ModelSim (an EDA application)
                   provide an interface to checkpoint
                   the state of execution.

I don't know what kind of applications you want to
run, and the OS support for checkpointing -- more info
is needed.
