Another alterantive for vmware could be

www.colinux.org, something like cygwin but it boots up whole linux system, and 
its gpl. Some ports are there around for gentoo debian and redhat, with 2.4 
and 2.6 kernel.
It could be started as a deamon in the background, and it^s ssh able from 
outside.
Main advantage GPL = no costs, only brain power.
