I'd like to invite the subscribers to this new BioEdu list to check out MolSlides (http://molslides.proteinexplorer.org). MolSlides are slides with rotating, zoomable macromolecular views, that display in a web browser. MolSlides can be used to illustrate lectures on protein or nucleic acid structure, and can easily be posted on class websites for students to review. MolSlides are easy enough to make that students can be assigned to make them for reports or homework. MolSlides are made in Protein Explorer (PE, http://proteinexplorer.org), which is an easy-to-use browser-based on-line program for visualizing and understanding macromolecular structure. PE has extensive built-in help, both technical, and explanations of how to interpret its macromolecular views, and slides introducing structural bioinformatics (http://tinyurl.com/pftxo). Flash movies introduce PE to new users, saving you the class time that would otherwise needed for that. Once you get a molecular view that you like, you can save it to a MolSlide with a few mouse clicks. MolSlides can be created only in MS Windows (including in Windows running within Intel Mac OSX, using Parallels.Com). MolSlides cannot be created on Mac PPC's. However, MolSlides can use Jmol, enabling the MolSlides themselves (once created) to display on all common platforms (including Mac PPC OSX, Intel Mac OSX, linux, and Windows) in popular browsers such as Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. Nothing specific needs to be installed in order to view MolSlides using Jmol (but java must be present). Examples of MolSlides in Jmol are at the first link at http://molslides.proteinexplorer.org.
