My guess is that you need to probe experimentallists about this question, and that you will get as many different answers as groups you ask. Can you make / hook up to a website which lists genes found in (or not) fly / worm / yeast / human / fugu / arab, with a functinal annotation and allow people to vote on importance (with regard to those missing in human)?
