OK, that fixed it - The italic '8' looks a bit odd to my eyes: Was the
'7' you used before the same font?

I also noticed that on the 'greeter' screen the (dotted) version of the
current desktop wallpaper is not stretched or zoomed to fill the screen
as it was before on a 1600x900 external monitor connected to my laptop.

Although this is a trivial in one sense, it's the first impression that
new people get of Bio-Linux. First impressions can, and often do, make a
difference so I think it's worth getting it right.

I'm still upgrading my 'work' workstation "wildcat"...
