Well, I can update the configure script, though when you were writing, I 
was asleep... IIRC, I'm 7 hours behind you. I'm surprised that autoconf 
even did anything for Tommi--that's the purposes of the PREREQ portion. 
The older versions will not properly create directories for builddir != 
srcdir.

I'll update my CVS copy and see what happens when I get in to work.
