In the grand scheme of things, numbered dots can't be used.  It just won't
work when you have loci inside of loci inside of loci ad infinitum.

I think a better approach is to use a combination of MIME and ID numbers, to
ensure the connection type is know and that it is completely unique (all
connectors can be identified without confusion).

A recent idea I had was to use 'windowlets' with the dots so that more
detailed information about the connection can be found by double-clicking on
the dot (exactly like windowlets under icons).  How does that sound?
