I think rc files suck.  The Windows registry was a step in the right direction
but of course marketing concerns caused its implementation to be suboptimal. 

Nonetheless, centralized, standardized configurations are the wave of the future
(and some cynics might add, "and always will be", cf. parallel computing ;-).
