The SVM method for classifying into families uses supervised learning,
so you need to have some properly labeled examples to begin with.
The method worked well for GPCRs, which had a number of carefully
labeled sequences. 

It is not really comparable with unsupervised clustering, such as
Mensur Dlakic describes, which is better for discovering subfamilies.
