RESEARCH PLAN (Overview)

Part 1: Specific Aims

The aim of the research project is to create a physical simulation of embryogenisis, beginning at fertilization and including gastrulation.

Creating the simulation with serve three core purposes:

1. Create a database of developmental biology data.
2. Provide a platform for integrating developmental knowledge.
3. Allow different developmental theories to be tested.

The physical simulation will involve modelling the process of embryogenisis at the level of individual cells. The properties of the cells will be modulated in response to biochemical signals. The model will be compared to data collected by imaging.

Part 2: Background and Significance

Systems biology is modelling biochemical flux using ODEs, PDEs, etc. Physical modelling, however, is directly relevant to developmental biology, generating physical results that can be directly compared to data collected from imaging experiments.
