[BioBrew Users] is BioBrew right for me?

Disclaimer: I'm going to recommend one a linux distribution I helped prepare,
your mileage may vary.

Biobrew is a bit heavy for installing on a laptop for personal use, it's
geared towards a cluster of dedicated computers.

I can suggest bioknoppix: http://bioknoppix.hpcf.upr.edu/

It's a linux live CD with many tools for bioinformatics. It's designed to run
right off the CD, but can be installed to a partition on a hard drive.
Installed size is around 2 GB.

DNALinux is a similar project, but based on SLAX, the last time I looked. I
recommend one of those, as you can start working with the programs and linux
without having to deal with partitions or anything. As you build more
knowledge and confidence in your linux skills, then you can install to a
partition.

Good luck,
