MySQL to Release New Versions Under the GNU GPL
Submitted by Gary Van Domselaar; posted on Saturday, July 01, 2000
Submitter New versions of the very popular MySQL database management system (DBMS) will now be released under the GNU GPL license. Last year, the developers decided to release older versions of the software under the GPL, keeping the newer versions under the ''free [as in beer] for non-commercial use'' license, originally used for all versions of MySQL. ''We have always considered ourselves committed members of the Open Source and Free Software communities,'' said Monty Widenius, project leader of MySQL. ''Moving to the GNU General Public License (GPL) is a way to show this.'' The developers have also moved project management to SourceForge.net.
