    BACKGROUND:
    Medtronic Corporate Science and Technology division, located at the headquarters in Fridley, MN is currently screening candidates for a senior database administrator position. In brief, we are conducting a series of studies to identify genetic markers that relate to our devices. The position would involve the design and maintenance of a database for our genetic and clinical data as well as a significant amount of data mining of both internal Medtronic databases and external government databases.

    The position is listed as a Senior Database Administrator and is an entry level position for either a PhD or a MS with a few years of experience.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Establish essential databases for research.
    • Maintain and manage clinical and research databases.
    • Organize and maintain datawarehouses for clinical, preclinical and in vitro research.
    • Conduct database searches in support of strategic & scientific research as well as hypothesis generation.
    • Build networks with internal and external datastructures for running queries.
    • Initiate and carry out data mining activities for hypothesis generation and hypothesis testing.
    • Develop computer programs for data handling and format conversion.
    Support clinical, pre-clinical and in vitro research teams.
    • Provide consultation to research study designers, data monitoring committees and biostatisticians.
    • Participate in ongoing research projects and initiate independent research studies.
    • Interact with researchers in the Business Units and outside clinicians and scientists.
    Other Functions:
    • Assist in the review of existing intellectual property.
    • Participate in the generation and filing of patent applications.
    • Prepare reports and present findings in internal and external meetings.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimal Requirements:
    • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, BioInformatics, Computer Science or a related field
    • Experience with databases, SAS, ACCESS, UNIX operating system, programming and bioinformatics tools and existing public databases.
    • Strong computer programming skills.
    Preferred Requirements:
    • Industrial work experience
    • Experience with clinical study design and data analysis
    • Familiarity with clustering algorithms
    • Intellectual property experience
