I just thought it's a good time to let everyone know of another, more scientific application for Piper. I'm working on developing Piper building blocks ranging from speech/signal processing to neural networks and real-time audio effect processing. This is the part of Piper that comes from the Overflow (http://freespeech.sourceforge.net/overflow.html) project. Although Piper integration is not fully completed, all these tools are already quite usable (I've been exclusivly using them for my master project for ~1 year). So to all the ones interested in more scientific applications... you are not alone! ...not to forget Brad and Jeff (and others I forget) working on bioinformatics applications.
