Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellow in BIOINFORMATICS @ Bilkent University -- Ankara, Turkey
Submitted by Can Alkan; posted on Thursday, December 27, 2012

    BACKGROUND

A postdoctoral position is available immediately at the Lab for Computational Genomics in the Department of Computer Engineering, Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, for multiple projects that involve combinatorial optimization, sequence analysis algorithms, and graph theory.

At the Lab for Computational Genomics, we develop combinatorial algorithms to analyze genomic sequence data to discover, genotype, and phase genomic variants with a special focus on structural variation and segmental duplication. We are also interested in de novo genome assembly and transcriptome analysis. We apply our algorithms on sequence data generated from the genomes of various organisms including humans, to catalogue normal variation, nd disease associations, and study genome evolution.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The main project will involve discovery and characterization of genomic variation using high throughput sequence data, however there may be other projects that might need minor contributions. Successful applicant will also have a chance to contribute to many international consortiums including the 1000 Genomes Project (http://www.1000genomes.org) and will be involved in other international collaborations.

More details can be found in our lab web page at:
    http://www.cs.bilkent.edu.tr/~calkan/compgen

    REQUIREMENTS

    * Ph.D. degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or mathematics with strong background in combinatorial algorithm design. Ph.D. candidates who expect to graduate soon are welcome to apply.
Experience in bioinformatics research is strongly preferred.

Strong skills in high level programming languages. Pro ciency in C/C++ is a must, Java programming experience is a plus.
    • Our group has several large-scale collaborative e orts, and interested candidates must be able to work closely with international teams of scientists with broad areas of expertise.

    HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should email a cover letter, CV, brief research statement and list of 3 references to Dr. Can Alkan (calkan[at]cs.bilkent.edu.tr). Please combine all files into a single PDF and use the subject line "Postdoc Application: (name)".
