Opportunity: Senior BIOINFORMATICIAN -- Pathogen Informatics (#81266) @ Wellcome Trust Sanger institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Thursday, January 17, 2013

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Wellcome Trust Sanger institute is a world leader in delivering large scale DNA sequencing projects using the latest sequencing technologies. The Pathogen Informatics team at the institute is responsible for the delivery of many of the largest prokaryote and eukaryote sequencing projects in the world. One such project is the global tracking of the spread of MRSA over four decades (Evolution of MRSA During Hospital Transmission) and another is the 50 helminth genomes sequencing project (50 Helminths Genome Project). As part of the pathogen Informatics group, we are seeking to hire a skilled informatician to develop systems to manage and query the vast amounts of sequencing variation data produced within the institute.

This role would suit somebody with highly developed programming skills and is looking for a new challenge. The successful candidate will work closely with the lead developers and analysts in the team so previous experience with sequencing data is not strictly necessary. This position would be a very good opportunity for someone to gain significant experience working with next-generation sequencing data.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Significant programming experience in one or more modern programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, C++ etc.)
    • Experience of object oriented development
    • Knowledge and experience of UNIX / LINUX on an advanced level
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to quickly adapt to new problems and ideas
    • Excellent problem-solving skills
    • A high level of communication skills to be able to elicit complex requirements from, and convey complex information to, groups with different levels of technical knowledge

    PREFERENCES

    Ideal Skills:
    • Some knowledge or experience in bioinformatics
    • Experience with managing large volumes of data
    • Experience with running software on a compute farm or cluster
    • Experience with processing next-generation sequencing data
    • Knowledge of relational database systems and manipulation via SQL

    TERMS

    Contract Type: Permanent

    COMPENSATION

Salary range GBP 27589 to GBP 38067 dependent on experience
