Opportunity: Senior Principal Informatician -- Big Data Analytics (#R&D16-4) @ AstraZeneca -- Global
Submitted by AstraZeneca; posted on Wednesday, January 30, 2013

    Submitter

    OVERVIEW

AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven, integrated biopharmaceutical company. We employ over 57,000 people and have a presence in over 100 countries across six continents. Our mission is to make a meaningful difference to patient health through great medicines that bring benefit for patients and add value for our stakeholders and society.

AstraZeneca R&D Information organization is seeking a talented Senior Principal Big Data Informatics Scientist to drive the vision and strategy of Big Data Analytics in R&D and provide advanced hands on support to R&D activities across all therapeutics areas and phases of the drug discovery and development pipeline. The role requires close interaction with scientific drug discovery teams and informatics colleagues to generate and test data-driven hypotheses, involving advanced experimental data and working on research projects that will make a real difference for patients.

Renowned within AstraZeneca as an expert in Big Data Analytics, and with a strong educational background and experience in the domain, the Sr. Principal Informatics Scientist will drive and develop Big Data Analytics to a world-class level that creates competitive advantage for AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca's Big Data Analytics efforts focus on data integration and analytics of multiple domains such as Pharmaceutical R&D data, clinical trials and health data, payer and claims data, patients' data and business intelligence data. In particular, the position requires deep understanding of the detailed Big Data scientific questions the drug teams are facing and the ability to drive and make active contributions to their solution. These contributions involve the gathering of large scale detailed scientific data from internal sources and the public domain, the manipulation, integration and statistical or empirical analysis of these data, including modeling and simulation. This requires the command of a suite of technical skills such as the detail knowledge of databases and search engines, High Performance Computing (HPC), cloud computing, real time data analysis, algorithm development, advanced statistical analysis, machine learning, modeling & simulation, visualization tools, and the ability to quickly create research-grade programs and scripts as well as complex state-of-the-art programming for scientific platforms development.

In addition, the successful candidate is expected to be adaptable, support a range of global scientific projects in parallel, effectively advocate for Big Data informatics solutions to scientists, be on top of and participate in external Big Data informatics developments, lead and support related platforms and capability development in the larger R&D information organization.

As a recognized thought leader in the Big Data Analytics field, in this role you will participate in the international Informatics and Information Science communities and establish external collaborations with thought leaders and technical experts in the domain. While maintaining awareness of external developments and new approaches, you will create an integrated view of Big Data Analytics knowledge, and define how it should evolve over time to ensure it is distinctive and meets the needs of the R&D business.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Responsible for the planning and delivery of Big Data informatics and information science solutions to drug research and development teams, including the detailed scientific interpretation of the findings.
    • Act as authority in Big Data Analytics decision making processes.
    • Advise strategic R&D programs on appropriate Big Data Analytics approaches and strategies and educate senior information owners on best practices and processes.
    • Maintain a trusting and productive relationship with the customer, gaining a thorough understanding of the science.
    • Develop, implement and employ Big Data informatics approaches such as advanced database queries, analysis of unstructured data, text mining, machine learning, modeling and simulation, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, web crawling, and web services.
    • Integrate and summarize large scale data and information across multiple domains, for example, genomics (NGS) and proteomics information, network pharmacology, business intelligence and health outcome data.
    • Digest complex data structures, perform statistical data reduction, summarization, normalization and multivariate data analyses, report findings using advanced visualization techniques such as Spotfire, Tableau, Partek or similar applications.
    • Present and discuss findings with global project teams and other informaticians, support iterative solutions development and scientific research.
    • Stay updated on industry best practices and drive the adoption of novel approaches and methods in the field of Big Data Analytics within the scientific and the informatics community.
    • Follow core project management practices, such as project justification, initiation, stakeholder communication and delivery.
    • Coach and develop colleagues in best practice and skills development and expertise in the tools and techniques critical to Big Data Informatics/Information science within AZ.
    • Lead and contribute to the overall Big Data Informatics strategy and architecture
    • Present to internal and external scientific communities on Big Data informatics solutions, best practices and scientific approaches, including external scientific publication.
