Organization: PB-Physical Biosciences
BACKGROUND
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is building a next-generation computational resource for biological investigation, the Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase). This integrated software system aims to become the "go-to" online community for biological research.
KBase is a collaborative effort designed to accelerate our understanding of microbes, microbial communities, and plants. It will be a community-driven, extensible and scalable open-source software framework and application system. Collaborations with other Department of Energy (DOE) projects, including biofuel research, bioremediation, and the Earth's carbon cycle will provide exciting opportunities for advancing fundamental and applied biological science. By providing tools for systems biology experimental design and data analysis and creating a platform to enable predictive modeling and hypothesis generation and testing, KBase will change the way biological research is done.
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a talented software developer with bioinformatics / computational biology experience. The successful applicant will have opportunities to work on a wide range of software development tasks, including user interface design, data integration, database and software interface design, and high-performance computing and bioinformatic algorithm development.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (also known as the Berkeley Lab), located in and near Berkeley, California, is a national lab that offers a research environment similar to that found at academic institutions. Work will be performed in collaboration with a talented team with diverse experience and offer many opportunities to broaden one's knowledge and interact with scientists on breakthrough projects.
REQUIREMENTS
Desired skills include programming (JavaScript, Perl, Python, Java), API development and web services (REST / JSON-RPC), database experience (SQL), web interface and data visualization experience, and high-performance cloud / cluster computing experience (Hadoop MapReduce and/or cluster systems like SGE or Condor). Bioinformatics experience should include a basic understanding of biology, with genomics and gene functional annotation and metabolic modeling (via sequence homology / gene family / phylogenetics and functional genomics data such as transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and fluxomics) preferred.
POLICY
Berkeley Lab is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer committed to the development of a diverse workforce.
