Opportunity: Senior BIOINFORMATICIAN/Programmer -- Parasite Genomics (#81383) @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Saturday, February 16, 2013
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic senior bioinformatician/programmer for a Wellcome Trust funded project focused on integrating genome annotation and high-throughput datasets for kinetoplastid parasites (trypanosomes and Leishmania) into the principal database resources GeneDB and TriTrypDB and on making the data easily amenable to interrogation by the wider research community. In particular, the successful candidate will develop and implement (1) a robust annotation pipeline based largely on existing bioinformatics tools and (2) tools to enable and improve the systematic use of user comments, scientific literature, and new data types to contribute to the annotation. Furthermore, s/he will adapt and develop the database (data structure, queries, interface) to represent novel data sets and data types (including genome variation) and to respond to changing user requirements.
This position is highly collaborative in nature, and the successful candidate – located at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge, UK – will closely coordinate his/her activities with collaborators based in Liverpool, Glasgow, and Philadelphia, PA. S/he will also directly interact with kinetoplastid researchers worldwide, both remotely and at international conferences. This project represents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the provision of highly accessed database resources for neglected tropical diseases, and to join a multi-site consortium with an exceptional track record in genomics and bioinformatics.

Essential Skills:
- PhD (or MSc plus extensive work experience) in a relevant area of bioinformatics, biology or computational science
- At least intermediate level experience in programming in Perl or Python and in Java

- Some understanding of genomics/functional genomics
- Demonstrable problem solving skills
PREFERENCES
Ideal Skills:
- Experience in automating scripts and bioinformatic pipelines
- Extensive experience in gene/genome annotation
- Background in parasitology or kinetoplastid biology
- Demonstrable experience and initiative in developing and leading projects
- Experience in working with high-throughput biological datasets (e.g. next-generation sequencing)
- Strong presentation skills
