Opportunity: Senior BIOINFORMATICIAN (#81363) @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK

BACKGROUND
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute operates at the forefront of genomics, sequencing and analyses targeting a wide range of genomes from single cell pathogens to higher vertebrates, with an emphasis on genomes relevant to human medicine and welfare. The Cancer Genome Project at the Institute has led the way in the systematic analysis of cancer genomes by using the human genome sequence and high throughput mutation detection techniques to identify somatically acquired sequence variants/mutations and hence identify genes critical in the development of human cancers (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/research/projects/cancergenome/).
RESPONSIBILITIES
A highly motivated Bioinformatician is required, to undertake the analysis of genomic data from defined projects carried out by teams 82 (Mouse genomics) and 163 (Haematological cancer genetics).
This is a new position that has been created to carry out the analysis of genomic datasets generated by our teams. We perform genetic screens using insertional mutagens, including cancer gene/pathway discovery and drug sensitivity/resistance screens in vivo. Additionally, we are generating parallel genomic datasets from bespoke genetically modified stem cells and mice, including DNA methylation, gene expression and chromatin immunoprecipitation. The analysis, integration and visualisation of these datasets will be an important role of the successful applicant, who will be able to harness specific expertise already available at the Sanger Institute for such analyses.
The post holder will have good knowledge of molecular biology, bioinformatics and data acquisition methods. They will have a track record of delivering complex projects and a solid publication record. Highly experienced in system design, programming and the use of relational databases, they will ensure large scale data are managed and analysed in a robust, efficient manner.
Additional, they will be responsive and reactive to the needs of their project, hands-on and able to instruct others in the use of simple command line skills for routine tasks. It is envisaged that they will be able, in due course, to take on strategic responsibilities, while maintaining a hands-on attitude.
REQUIREMENTS
Essential Skills:
- PhD or equivalent expertise in a relevant subject area (e.g. Computational Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Computer Science, Physics or similar)
- Excellent programming skills (e.g. C, C++, Perl, Python, Java)
- Strong knowledge and experience of UNIX/Linux and cluster computing
- Strong statistical and quantitative skills
- Ability to perform & troubleshoot bioinformatic analyses competently and independently
- Strong publication record
- Ability to work to tight deadlines
- Ability to communicate ideas and results effectively
- Ability to work within a team
- Ability to work independently and organise own workload
PREFERENCES
Ideal Skills:
- Experience of developing software systems
- Education or experience in biomedical research
- Experience with analysis of next generation sequencing data
- Experience with analysis of -omics data sets
- Experience in presenting data to outside groups or at national/international meetings
- Previous experience with stem cells
- Previous work with mouse-derived data & databases
TERMS
This position is fixed-term for 3 years with a 6-month probation period.
COMPENSATION
Salary range: GBP 29,750 to GBP 37,525pa dependent on experience.
