    DESCRIPTION

    The Center for Infection and Immunity at the Mailman School of Public Health has an immediate opening for a Programmer Analyst in the Bioinformatics team. The successful applicant will provide bioinformatics support for ongoing research in virus pathogen detection and discovery in a large and dynamic laboratory at Columbia University and a global network of researchers who work on projects related to infectious disease surveillance and discovery in humans and wildlife.

    The candidate is expected to demonstrate the following skills:
    • At least one to two years of experience in writing pipelines and analysis of next generation sequencing data. The candidate should possess basic knowledge of data QC, mapping, de-novo assembly, BLAST and understanding of algorithms behind them.
    • Coursework in genetics and molecular biology as well as practical knowledge of major bioinformatics tools and resources: NCBI, UCSC etc.
    • The position requires the ability to work in Unix environments consisting of high performance clusters. Understanding of multi-threading tools (SGE, MPI), resource management and allocation would be a big plus.
    • At least one to two years of academic or industrial experience working with scripting languages, such as C Shell, Perl, or Python or R. Desired qualifications include: applied mathematics/statistics/biostatistics background and experience in object-oriented programming.
    • The candidate will perform other duties as assigned.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide bioinformatics support for ongoing research in virus detection and discovery in a large and dynamic laboratory – 85%
    • Contribute to publications and research grants – 10%
    • Perform other related duties as assigned – 5%

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science, Bioinformatics, or Computer Science and at least three years of related experience.

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree with 1-2 years of experience or equivalent.
