    Opportunity: Assistant/Associate Professor of BIOINFORMATICS @ University of Tennessee -- Knoxville, TN (US)

    OVERVIEW

    The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, AgResearch and College of Agricultural & Natural Resources. Assistant/Associate Professor in bioinformatics or computational biology. 12-month tenure-track faculty position, 50% collaborative research, 40% independent research and 10% teaching.

    The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is located in East Tennessee, close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Institute of Agriculture houses the Land Grant component of the university and consists of academic departments and units (Animal Science, Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science, Entomology & Plant Pathology, Food Science & Technology, Forestry, Wildlife & Fisheries, Plant Sciences, and the Center for Renewable Carbon) conducting fundamental and applied research that addresses problems in production of food, fiber, energy, and environmental/agricultural sustainability. In many instances, various omics-related techniques are used to address these and related problems. This position can be located in any of the academic departments depending on the successful candidate's background and expertise, but is expected to enhance the bioinformatics capability of all units.     RESPONSIBILITIES

    Collaborate with research teams across the Institute in grant writing, data analysis, and publications (50%), develop an independent research program in bioinformatics or computational biology (40%), and teach one graduate course per year that enhances bioinformatics capabilities of all units (10%). Recruiting and advising graduate students, securing extramural funding, publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and developing a nationally recognized research program are expected. A commitment to departmental, institutional, and professional citizenship such as advising/mentoring students in enrichment activities and service on committees is required.

    REQUIREMENTS

    A Ph.D. in a life, agricultural, or computer science/engineering discipline with established expertise in the use of bioinformatics or computational biology for the analysis of complex biological data; excellent communication skills in written and oral English; a significant publication record in peer-reviewed literature; and potential for success in obtaining extramural grant or contract funding.

    PREFERENCES

    Evidence of the ability to contribute to collaborative research teams; post-doctoral or other relevant experience beyond the Ph.D.; scientific work in a research discipline directly related to agricultural sciences; formal statistical training.
