    Opportunity: Bioinformatics Position (#20854) @ Northwestern University -- Chicago, IL (US)

    DESCRIPTION

    Bioinformatics Analyst position in the Center for Genetic Medicine's Genomics Core facility, at Northwestern University.

    The bioinformatics analyst will perform basic and advanced analysis on data produced from Whole Genome Association Studies, next generation sequencing systems and microarray experiments. This position will use current open source software in conducting data analysis for a next generation sequencing system at basic or advanced level. This position will partner with the director of the Genomics core facility to design experiments in next generation sequencing studies.

    The candidate must have a background in bioinformatics and biostatistics. The candidate must be comfortable working in a Linux environment, have shell scripting experience, software development experience using scripting language and object-oriented programming (Perl, Python, JAVA), and experience with statistical packages (R or Mathlab). Experience with analyzing NGS data (SOLiD), Ion PGM and Illumina is a plus.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Principal Accountabilities:
    Developing software or using current open source or third party commercial software to conduct data analysis for next generation sequencing systems from ABI (SOLiD), Ion Torrent and other NGSs, genotyping, CNV and methylation analysis for the Illumina system and microarray analysis at basic and advanced levels. (70%)

    Along with the director of the Genomics core facility help design experiments in Whole Genome Association, next generation sequencing and microarray studies. Prepare manuscripts on related data analysis. (15%)

    Documentation and good software practice management and mentoring. (10%)

    Work with other bioinformatics as needed. Management of related data produced at the Core Facility. (5%)

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications / Competencies:
    • A bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science or related + 3 years of experience in programming or informatics, Or a master's degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science or related + 1 year of experience in programming or informatics or related
    • Two to three years of experience in programming or informatics
    • Familiarity with high-dimensional data mining and machine learning. Background in statistics is preferred.
    • Willingness and capability to share knowledge with other members of the team
    • Demonstrated ability to learn about new technologies
    • Demonstrated ability in working with commercial software
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals and groups
    • Ability to multitask, work and learn independently, and be self-motivated
    • A record of taking the initiative to solve problems and working to high-quality standards

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Qualifications / Competencies:
    • PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics or computer science or related field with appropriate experience in developing software or the equivalent in experience and education
    • User support and training experience
    • Experience working in an academic or health care computing environment
    • Record of taking the initiative to solve problems and working with high standards
    • Familiarity with software versioning tools
