    Opportunity: Clinical Bioinformatics Software Developer (#225303JC) @ Baylor College of Medicine -- Houston, TX (US)

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) at Baylor College of Medicine seeks an enthusiastic individual to work with software in a rapidly evolving research environment to support the advance of next generation sequencing technology and genomics research. This position will participate in the development of an automated clinical sequencing pipeline.

    As one of three large-scale sequencing centers funded by the National Institutes of Health, HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge genomic scientists.

    Responsibilities:
    • Perform analysis, design, implementation, documentation and unit testing of software for the standard pipelined analysis of clinical next generation sequencing data.
    • Participate in the design, implementation, testing, and deployment of extensions of the existing production QC and analysis systems, as well as new versions of them.
    • Provide support of the existing production sequence QC and analysis systems, including the resolution of custom user and data retrieval requests.
    • Ensure that all CLIA requirements are being met by the software and environment.
    • Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering.
    • Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
    • Communicate regularly with customers and supervisory staff about plans, designs and progress.
    • Present technical and analytical status in weekly meetings and contribute to publications.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences.

    Preferred: Master's degree.

    Required: Three years of experience in scientific programming with applications to genome research or a Master's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences and 1 year of directly related work experience.

    Preferred: Two years of Bioinformatics software development. Strong computational/programming skills; including extensive experience with the following: UNIX environment; Clustered computing: (MOAB/Torque, PBS, or LSF familiarity); Next-generation analysis toolkits (PICARD, GATK, Samtools, etc.). Advanced skills in two programming languages including Ruby, Java, Perl, or C++.

    Skills:
    • Excellent knowledge of public biological database and software for annotation of variant data.
    • Text mining and natural language processing methods.
    • Familiarity with multi-processing/threading methods, and workflow/pipeline tools.
    • Experience producing code documentation.
    • Exposure to statistical analysis of large datasets.
    • Experience integrating software with LIMS.
    • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple software requirements.
    • Ability to function independently and solve technically complex problems.
