    Senior Bioinformatics Scientist

    Job Description
    SUMMARY
    Work with bioinformatics and experimental scientists, IT specialists on data mining and analysis, informatics pipeline and application design, database management and laboratory automation in a newly established genomics R&D division. Reports to the Head of IT & Bioinformatics.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES [Other duties may be assigned]
    • Enable integration and construction of scientific databases and applications in a growing genomics and proteomics R&D setup. Database and knowledge management technology include ORACLE, XML and large-scale flat file systems. Scientific applications include sequence analysis methods, clustering algorithms, functional and statistical analysis methods.
    • Provide strong bioinformatics support to and conduct in-depth scientific study with the experimental efforts at the Institute. Work closely with the laboratory staff in the design and interpretation of experiments.
    • Share responsibility for coordination of bioinformatics activities with major biotech partner, e.g. data analysis, workflow design, software design, project management and more.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Possible QUALIFICATIONS
    To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to carry out the each essential duty satisfactorily.     • Five years experience in research and development work in a bioinformatics setting, preferably industrial. Have contributed to major informatics projects, playing leading roles.
    • Knowledge of advanced bioinformatics methods, tools and resources in sequence retrieval and alignment techniques, clustering techniques, expression profiling analysis, protein structure analysis, major databases in the field etc.
    • Ability to maintain nucleic acid and protein databases both in flat file and relational data structures as well as programming skills in ORACLE/SQL, JAVA, PERL, C, HTML, XML and/or other high level programming languages.
    • Strong knowledge of operating systems such as UNIX, LINUX, and Window NT/2000/XP.
    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
    • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or closely related field
    • Intimate knowledge of regulatory networks in biological systems is advantageous.
    LANGUAGE SKILLS
    • English, German helpful
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
    • Mathematical background in applied statistics or biostatistics helpful.
