    BACKGROUND

    This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing group at the Harvard Medical School and have a major impact on the way information technology is delivered in a world class research institution. HMS Research Computing is the principal provider of High Performance Computing services to the research community at Harvard Medical School. The group supports a large High Performance Compute environment with thousands of processor cores, terabytes of memory and petabytes of storage and enables access to hundreds of applications for computational biology. In addition to HPC, we host a high availability web and database application environment. This houses applications and websites serving the entire school, provides an application stack that is integrated with the HPC environment and also hosts content and administrative applications. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the team and a senior contributor in building computational services in support of the research community.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Reporting to the Director of Research Computing the Senior Research Computing Consultant acts as a technical resource for HMS faculty and researchers, translating between scientific research needs and computing solutions. Meets with the research community, understands their bioinformatics and computing requirements, and optimizes workflow or applications. Provides technology consulting for researchers at the intersection of life sciences research and computing. Analyze and make recommendations within research community in support of Research Computing services. Develop, analyze and deploy methodologies to enable and enhance analysis of data generated by the research community that efficiently utilize the Research Computing environment. Through interaction with the community and by staying abreast of the field, brings information about new technologies to the group and works with the Research Computing staff in the evaluation, integration and deployment of new technologies. Leads and coordinates training and outreach to the research community in the use of tools and technologies supported by Research Computing. Investigate and provide recommendations for new computational and data analysis technologies in support of the needs of the research community.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Bachelor's degree in life sciences, computer science, informatics, engineering, related field or equivalent work experience. 7 plus years of relevant experience in IT, life sciences, bioinformatics, engineering or as biologist or computer scientist required. A minimum of 4 years of Linux and HPC experience is required.

    PREFERENCES

    Life sciences experience is strongly preferred. Advanced science or engineering degree preferred, experience with Platform LSF, Debian Linux and bioinformatics a plus. Must have a demonstrable level of proficiency with Perl, Python and/or shell. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong ability to interact with an engaged and demanding user community.

    TERMS

    Despite the "consultant" job title, the position is a full-time, permanent position.
