Opportunity: Post Doctoral Fellow @ J. Craig Venter Institute -- San Diego, CA (US)
Submitted by Julia Lang; posted on Monday, June 17, 2013
RESPONSIBILITIES
J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is looking for a Computational Biology Post-Doctoral Fellow to join their San Diego, CA location.
The post-doc will develop novel algorithms and statistical tools for the analysis and interpretation of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequence data. The Post Doctoral Fellow will apply these methods to human microbiome, marine metagenome, and other environmental datasets, in order to further our understanding of microbial ecology, evolution, and function, and to subsequently generate novel testable hypotheses. Areas of interest include sequence assembly, taxonomic and functional analysis, biodiversity estimation, and sample comparison.
REQUIREMENTS
Successful candidates will possess a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, or computer science, or other disciplines providing training and experience in computer science and understanding of biology plus a strong demonstrated computer programming experience, including knowledge of major programming languages: compiled (C/C++ or Java), scripting (Perl or Python) and SQL. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in graph-theoretic algorithms and machine-learning approaches, and is comfortable working with large volumes of sequence data generated by Next-Generation Sequencing technologies. A working knowledge of microbial ecology is also required.
