Opportunity: Bioinformatics Database and Application Developer (#IRIDA2013_DAD5) @ The Hsiao Laboratory -- Vancouver, BC, Canada
Submitted by William Hsiao; posted on Wednesday, June 19, 2013

    BACKGROUND

Are you interested in bioinformatics research involving infectious disease surveillance and outbreak investigations, and playing a critical role in a national and international collaboration involving academic, provincial and federal laboratories?

The Hsiao Laboratory at BC Public Health Microbiology and Reference Laboratory and University of British Columbia has an open position for a full-time database and application developer position. The developer will be part of a team across Canada to develop a bioinformatics platform and associated database and analysis tools to facilitate infectious disease outbreak investigations (see http://www.genomecanada.ca/en/about/news.aspx?i=431 for initial announcement).

    RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS

The qualified applicant will have a bachelor degree in computer science, bioinformatics or related fields. The person will be part of an interdisciplinary team of public health researchers and software developers to design and implement an analysis platform for infectious disease outbreak investigations. The primary responsibilities of the candidate will involve consolidating existing data sources, facilitating database design, software setup and writing cloud and web enabled applications. Experience developing in a Unix/Linux environment using Java/Python and SQL are desirable assets. Knowledge in biology is not essential but interest in applying CS and IT to solve health care and biological problems is a must. Technologies used in the project include RDF (resource description framework), semantic web, virtualization, and the Java Spring framework. The successful candidate will have strong self-motivation and can work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-tasking environment.
