    BACKGROUND

    THIS IS AN AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT FUNDED POSITION.

    The Cancer Genome Atlas Project (TCGA) is a comprehensive and coordinated effort to accelerate our understanding of the molecular basis of cancer through the application of genome analysis technologies.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Will provide engineering support for Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. efforts in support of TCGA. This support includes but is not limited to:
    • Direct the day-to-day activities of the Software Development Team, manage the software development lifecycle and ensure timely software releases;
    • Enforce existing processes for requirements management, configuration management, software release management, testing and documentation, and support the definition of project wide processes;
    • Responsible for translating business requirements from bioinformaticians into system requirements and timely software implementation;
    • Manage software releases and ensure build and deployment compliance with NCI Center for Bioinformatics and Information Technology (CBIIT).

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Possession of a Master's degree in computer science, information systems, biomedical science/bioinformatics or related field from an accredited college or university or six (6) years related experience in lieu of Master's degree.
    • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
    • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of six (6) years direct experience in a production-level software development environment including two (2) years in a leadership capacity.
    • Must have a strong background in Java, Perl programming and database management.
    • Working knowledge of bioinformatics and experience working with Ph.D. researchers and M.D.'s to develop software requirements.
    • Familiarity with the full Software Development Lifecycle from inception through deployment and operations and maintenance.
    • Wide knowledge of open source technologies and experience in incorporating into software projects.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of scientific personnel and administrative staff through written and oral presentations.
    • This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

    PREFERENCES

    • PhD degree preferred.
    • Experience with bioinformatics systems.
    • Experience in developing projects that involve CentOS, Apache, Tomcat, Oracle, and Maven.
    • Working experience with multiple types of next generation sequencing data, experience gaining consensus with bioinformaticians/researchers to develop data format specifications.
    • Experience with NCI is a plus.
