    BACKGROUND

A lively team and wider community of computational biologists, medical geneticists, and software engineers dedicated to creating the GATK, a general-purpose, open-source toolkit for applying next-generation DNA sequencing to medical genetics. An integral part of the Broad Institute, a new kind of deeply-collaborative research institution that is transforming medicine and human health by building software to organize, process, and visualize scientific data on an unprecedented scale.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Will conceive and develop algorithms and analysis approaches to solve the key challenges for emerging DNA sequencing technologies, instantiate these ideas in usable software tools, and apply these tools to flagship Program projects like 1000 Genomes with revolutionary implications in human medical genetics. Will apply computational techniques and biological domain knowledge to design and implement analysis tools to solve complex computational and mathematical problems. Will work collaboratively with other scientists on computational research in a fast-paced environment. Must enable the research of other program scientists through excellent communication, teamwork, and a focus on creating usable and accessible research software tools. Must be capable of working in an interactive team environment while conducting self-directed research within broader goals set by group.

    REQUIREMENTS

Must have significant programming and algorithm development experience with a Ph.D. in computer science or related field and familiarity with biological research problems. Must have track record of high-quality computational research. Must possess excellent general computational and programming skills; extensive experience with Java (or C/C++), and familiarity with Python (or Perl), and analysis tools like MATLAB and/or R. Excellent oral and written English communication skills required.
