    RESPONSIBILITIES

    In this critical role, you will serve as Chief Science and Technology Officer (CSTO) for the Joint BioEnergy Institutute (JBEI), in a multi-lab, multi-institutional environment located in Emeryville, California. As a senior member of JBEI's leadership team, you will have major management responsibilities providing overall leadership and oversight for key scientific divisions at JBEI including Feedstocks, Deconstruction, Fuels Synthesis, and Technologies. The program has approximately 175 staff members comprised of research and staff research scientists, research associate and computer systems staff, as well as postdocs and students.

    You will be responsible for the strategic direction and planning for new and existing programs and projects and initiatives, in addition to all integration across JBEI programmatic efforts, and with external collaborators both inside and outside of the DOE system. You will acts as liaison/spokesperson and represents JBEI to DOE, external agencies, participating national laboratories, industry and other organizations on scientific issues. Making significant contributions, and providing strong leadership and clear direction to accomplish JBEI's mission, you will be expected to contribute to research conducted at JBEI. Additionally, you will participate as an active member of the JBEI Research Committee comprised of the senior management team. The Vice Presidents of the key research areas report to the CSTO, and the CSTO reports to the JBEI Chief Executive Officer.

    JBEI was initially funded in 2007, having completed it's initial round of 5-year funding, and following a diligent review by the DOE is successfully into it's second round of 5-year funding, through September 2017. This role is funded 50% by the DOE, enabling you to continue with your own funded research or other external projects.

    Responsibilities:
    • Provide scientific oversight and leadership for key scientific and research programs; monitor the direction of programs and establish goals and objectives to meet DOE/JBEI mission critical goals.
    • Provide strategic direction and planning for programmatic areas including user support and project management.
    • Ensure high quality research is conducted and maintained; develop standards for research performance and ensure program excellence.
    • Implement management directives to enhance the credibility and stature of the JBEI as a preeminent BRC facility.
    • Serve as a participating member of the JBEI Research Committee.
    • Serve as Point of Contact for the Scientific Advisory Committee.
    • Act as liaison/spokesperson and represent the JBEI to DOE, external agencies, industrial contacts, and participating national laboratories and other organizations with regard to JGI scientific issues.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's/advanced degree in a related field and/or equivalent training experience with preferably a minimum of 15 years related work experience in overall management of large and complex programs.
    • Demonstrated experience in the management of large-scale research and research/production operation.
    • Demonstrated management and leadership skills necessary to communicate, present, direct, negotiate, influence and coordinate the programmatic activities with senior management, and staff internal and external to the Laboratory.
    • Ability to provide technical and scientific leadership at the interface between industrial-scale resource production operations and the applications of these resources to fundamental genomic research problems.
    • Experience in establishing effective collaborations and interacting with members of scientific community.
    • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills, mature judgment and ability to approach and resolve difficult issues using creative problem-solving skills and decision-making techniques.
    • Ability to effectively interact with personnel at various levels throughout the organization including interaction with LLNL, LBNL and across departmental and division lines, DOE, UC and other outside agencies and organizations.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated operational record of accomplishment that includes utilization of best business practices and judgment, holding individuals accountable, cultivating innovation and risk-taking, as well as a commitment to constructive change and improvement.

    PREFERENCES

    • PhD in a life or physical science or closely related discipline or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
    • Familiarity with UC, DOE, and national laboratory operations, procedures, and policies.
    • Expertise in sequencing technology and large-scale genomic sequencing.

    TERMS

    This is a 50% funded, 1-year, term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
