BACKGROUND

This Jr. Specialist position is ideal for a candidate interested in entry-level bioinformatics, scientific databases, and web development. The selected individual will be working on developing, administrating, and maintaining the TreeGenes database (http://dendrome.ucdavis.edu) and related websites in Dr. David Neale's lab. In addition, they will be asked to provide UNIX/Python scripting support and basic bioinformatics analysis (through existing tools). This appointment will require data entry and curation, as well as programming in Javascript, PHP, SQL, HTML and CSS in Linux and MAC OSX environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

(50% time) – Development and routine maintenance of web-based applications for the TreeGenes database.
(20% time) – Loading public data and assisting users with access and loads of their own data.
(25% time) – Developing scripts and running standard bioinformatics applications on various genomic datasets
(5% time) – Maintaining documentation and code in Git.

REQUIREMENTS

B.S./B.A. in Computer or Life Sciences or equivalent is required. Applicant must be comfortable in the UNIX environment. Scripting experience (Python and/or Perl) is required. Web programming experience (HTML, PHP, CSS, Javascript) is required. Basic knowledge of CMS/CMF (e.g. drupal, zope), the MVC software pattern, the Apache web server, database best practices (e.g. normal forms, materialized views), and the PostgreSQL platform is preferred. Experience and understanding of Genetics/Genomics concepts is desired. All aspects of this position require great attention to detail and organizational skills.

TERMS

Full time for 1 year. The position may be extended for up to 2 years.
