Opportunity: Bioinformatics Research Position @ University of Tennessee -- Knoxville, TN (US)
Submitted by Margaret Staton; posted on Tuesday, March 04, 2014
BACKGROUND
The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture is seeking a bioinformatics research associate I. The lab is focused on genomics and bioinformatics research in agricultural species. Participation in an NSF-funded project for the development of genomic resources for North American hardwood tree species will be the initial focus for this position. The project requires extensive RNA sequencing data analysis and continued development of a plant genomics website to disseminate information and data generated by the grant. The position will encompass activities such as writing software pipelines to process raw sequences, working with other scientists to extrapolate meaningful results, integrating genomic data into databases, and building the user interface systems for scientists to view, download, search and manipulate the data. These genomic datasets are examples of the new wave of "Big Data", and of primary concern will be leveraging high performance computational resources for fast analysis and interpretation of large, complex datasets. The successful applicant will be exposed to interdisciplinary, cutting edge research in the arena of bioinformatics and will have the opportunity to expand their skill set and grow with this exciting field of science.
