    Opportunity: Bioinformatics Software Engineer (Contractor) @ Gilead Sciences -- Foster City, CA (US)

    BACKGROUND

    A bioinformatics software engineer contractor position is available in the bioinformatics group of Gilead Sciences. The successful candidate should be a motivated individual with strong software development skills, excellent communication skills and an ability to work with diverse team members. The work will focus on developing a web-based bioinformatics platform, which enables research scientists to manage, explore, visualize, and analyze "Big Genomics Data". Applicants should have a demonstrated track record of successful software development projects, preferably in a scientific environment.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Design, implement, and maintain complex software programs that support bioinformatics research projects.
    • Responsible for maintaining large-scale genomic databases.
    • Collaborate with research scientists to plan software requirements.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • 3+ years of experience with BS degree or 1+ years of experience with MS degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or related field with a minor or substantial coursework in genomics or related science.
    • Good architectural understanding of web applications and application servers.
    • Proficient in object-oriented programming, e.g., Java, Python, or C++.
    • Knowledge in some of the standard front-end technologies, like JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, REST, and JSON.
    • Proficient in relational databases, e.g., MySQL.
    • Experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis is a big plus.
    • Experience with statistical analysis of biomedical data using R or SAS® software is a plus.
    • Experience in Perl and Linux environment is a plus.
    • Experience working in a scientific environment is desirable.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    TERMS

    Initial 6 months to 1 year contractor period. Extension is available based on performance.
