    BACKGROUND

    The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    EMBL is seeking a highly motivated bioinformatician/computational biologist to work in the Genome Biology Computational Support (GBCS) group. The position involves the maintenance of an EMBL-wide Galaxy installation, installation of new tools and scientific libraries (both on compute servers and within Galaxy), development of new analysis tools and workflows, participation in web software development (PHP, python) and analysis of genome wide datasets.

    In particular, the successful applicant will perform extensive analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data, including evaluating new software analysis tools as well as addressing specific biological questions. The successful applicant is in charge of supporting users on a daily basis, assembling training materials and organizing tutorials.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Qualifications and Experience:
    Applicants should have an appropriate university degree in computer science or bioinformatics (master degree with 3+ years of experience or PhD). Extensive experience in bioinformatics, analysis of large datasets, working in Unix environments and very good programming skills is required. Prior experience with analysis of NGS datasets (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, DNA-seq ...), R/bioconductor, Python, shell scripting and software/tool development (knowledge of SCMs, unit testing, design patterns ...) is a must.

    Experience with PHP, AJAX, Javascript, HTML, Java, Unix server administration, and/or software development is a definite advantage. The candidate should be able to work independently and also interact well within a team environment.

    The successful applicant will be organized (documentation and communication is an important aspect of the job), open-minded, able to work on different projects in parallel, proactive (problem solving skills are essential) and have a user-oriented spirit. A working knowledge of English is essential.
