    Opportunity: Senior Bioinformatician -- Maternity Cover @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK

    BACKGROUND

    We seek an experienced bioinformatician to develop innovative computational approaches to assemble, improve and analyse genomes and transcriptomes of major parasite species, integrating multiple data types including those from cutting-edge new technologies. The ideal candidate will have the experience and expertise to drive the development of novel algorithms for high-throughput sequence analysis, contributing to our substantive methodological research program in this area, with a view to making a critical contribution to one or more ongoing research projects during the term of this post. The successful applicant will work closely with software developers, manual genome-improvement staff, biologists and other bioinformaticians in a fast-paced, highly motivated environment. The role requires excellent communication skills as well as a practical ability to establish the scope and objectives of a project.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS

    • Extensive experience, usually demonstrated by a PhD or a significant number of years practical experience in bioinformatics or a related area
    • Experienced user of Unix/Linux operating systems
    • Highly competent Perl or Python programmer
    • Experience in next generation sequence or other biological high throughput methodologies
    • Good track record in developing innovative solutions to complex problems
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with appropriate formal or informal presentations and demonstrable ability to write clear and concise documentation
    • Ability to work effectively within a team, contributing to discussions and disseminating knowledge and information

    PREFERENCES

    • Good theoretical knowledge of common molecular biological approaches incl. cloning & DNA manipulation
    • Experienced MySQL, Oracle or postgres user
    • Good theoretical knowledge of DNA & RNA sequencing technology and bioinformatics
    • Good theoretical knowledge of DNA structure and organization
    • Knowledge of parasitology
    • Ability to supervise or train colleagues
    • Ability to coordinate work with others, or to appropriately delegate

    TERMS

    This is a fixed-term maternity cover position and will continue until the postholder returns to work after her period of maternity leave. Due to the nature of the contract no minimum or maximum period of employment can be guaranteed. The maximum period of maternity leave available to our employees is 12 months.

    LOCALE

    The Genome Campus is a 100-acre estate south of Cambridge in the grounds of Hinxton Hall. Nestled in the quiet countryside of these landscaped gardens, are two world-class research facilities: the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The site has become the British hub of biomedical science. The Campus is also home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.

    In addition to its peaceful location the campus offers excellent facilities including a start of the art data centre, gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, a cycle to work scheme, car sharing and free campus buses from various locations around Cambridge.

    Learning, development and networking are other important aspects of life on campus. there are a range of scientific seminars with our own and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops.

    COMPENSATION

    Our Benefits include: Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, Group Income Protection, Healthcare scheme, Childcare Vouchers, Nursery and Annual Leave 25 days plus Bank Holidays.

    Salary range: GBP 30196 to GBP 38088pa plus excellent benefits.
