Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics @ Vanderbilt University Medical Center -- Nashville, TN (US)
Submitted by Zhongming Zhao; posted on Thursday, April 17, 2014

    Submitter

    BACKGROUND

A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Zhongming Zhao's Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine Laboratory (BSML, http://bioinfo.mc.vanderbilt.edu) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The successful candidate is expected to join an established bioinformatics team, which is currently comprised of 15 members (Research Assistant Professors, bioinformatics postdocs, PhD students, and Program Coordinator). The ongoing projects in BSML focus on personal genomics and personalized medicine, pan-cancer studies, next-generation sequencing data analyses, microRNA regulatory networks, and complex disease studies using bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. Integrative genomics approaches are often applied. Funding is available to support this position for up to three years. The candidate will have the opportunity to access many high throughput datasets and interact with Vanderbilt Medical Center investigators. The lab has an excellent post-doctoral training track record (e.g. 9 former postdocs are currently faculty members, two received Young Investigator Awards from national foundations, and two were finalists for the Vanderbilt Postdoc of the Year Award).

Vanderbilt's Department of Biomedical Informatics (http://dbmi.mc.vanderbilt.edu) is the largest academic department of biomedical informatics in the country, with more than 70 faculty members, an NIH/NLM supported graduate training program, and a portfolio of research and development projects that spans from computational biology and bioinformatics applied to the understanding of biological molecules, through advanced clinical information systems that care for hundreds of thousands of patients at Vanderbilt, to regional health information projects that span many states. Vanderbilt University School of Medicine ranks top 10 in NIH funding.

    REQUIREMENTS

The qualified candidates should be highly motivated in research and have a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, or related field upon the job start date. The successful candidate should have some experience in analyzing high-throughput genomic data and proven skills in at least one programming language (Perl, Java, or C/C++). Good understanding of molecular biology and familiarity with biostatistics are plus. For more information, please visit our web site http://bioinfo.mc.vanderbilt.edu.
