BACKGROUND
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
We are looking for an expert in computational biology to run the new Centre of Biological Modelling (CBM) based in Heidelberg. Exciting research at EMBL, in structural and computational biology, cell biology and biophysics, development and genome biology, produce ground breaking experimental observations. There is an urgent need for mathematical modelling to generate from this data mechanistic insights based on physical/chemical first principles. The CBM thrives to raise the impact of modelling at EMBL by:- Consulting EMBL researchers on bio-modelling research problems.
- Participating in research projects with modelling component.
- Teaching of hands-on training courses of modelling techniques.
- Arranging workshops and seminars relating to modelling.
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will have PhD in physical biology, computational biology or similar fields and strong skills in mathematical modelling. The particular areas of interest include, but are not limited to, mechanistic modelling of regulatory, signalling, and metabolic networks, protein-drug interactions, cellular processes or tissue mechanics. She/he should have good communication skills and a high motivation to interact with the researchers of diverse backgrounds and in several international locations. An understanding of the basic concepts of molecular and cell biology and the desire to apply theoretical concepts to practical problems are essential. Programming skills in more than one language (MATLAB, Python, Java/C++, R, etc.) will be an advantage.LOCALE
