BACKGROUND
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are looking for a Computational Biologist, (Bio)Informatician or (Bio)Statistician to strengthen a new research group focused on Personalized Functional Genomics. One of the main interests of the group is the statistical analysis and integration of large-scale `omics data to answer biological questions related to understanding the molecular causes of complex genetic traits and diseases. The scientific programmer will play a key role in the day-to-day activities of the group.
The main responsibilities will include:
- Providing programming and statistics support to the group (especially PhD students and post-docs). In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on independent research projects.
- Developing data analysis pipelines and databases for different research projects.
- Interaction with the other statistics/programming staff at EMBL for ensuring efficiency and synergy.
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal applicant should hold a PhD or similar experience in (Bio)Informatics, (Bio) Statistics, Computational Biology, or a related field and have a solid background in statistics and basic knowledge of molecular genetics. Basic skills with the LINUX/UNIX operating system are essential. Furthermore, a strong background in statistical programming is mandatory. Experience in a scripting or programming language and/or web programming will be considered an asset. Familiarity with the analysis, integration and management of large-scale genomics and functional genomics datasets and experience with R/Bioconductor will be considered an advantage. In particular experience with genomics sequencing data (e.g. RNA-Seq, ChIP-seq, or variant calling) will be a plus. Strong communication skills as well as the ability to interact with other scientists and to work in an international and interdisciplinary team are essential.
