    RESPONSIBILITIES

    An exciting opportunity is available to carry out applied research utilizing state-of-the-art Genomic technology. We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to work in the Target & Pathway Validation department, within the Platform Technology & Science division of R&D, to support various research activities including Oncology, Infectious Disease, Metabolic Disease, Respiratory Disease, Inflammation & Vaccines.
    The position will involve collaboration with multiple units across GSK (Platform Technology & Science, Medicines Discovery & Development, Oncology, Biopharmaceuticals, R&D China, GSK Biologicals – Belgium) as well as external collaborators & vendors. Excellent communication, organisation & presentation skills are required, as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
    As a member of the Experimental/Core Molecular Biology group, the job holder will provide primary data analysis support to R&D customers. There will be a need for continued review of existing methods & due diligence of new data analysis tools as they emerge. There will also be a focus on data management (data generation, QC analysis, visualization & storage) & data integration. The job holder will work closely with colleagues in Quantitative Sciences/Computational Biology & in Statistics for more in-depth data analysis & to implement greater integration of complex data sets across the drug discovery pipeline, from project conception to the clinic.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Master or Bachelor degree in Computer Sciences, Bioinformatics or a related discipline
    • 3-5 years of web application graphical interface development skills and object oriented designprogramming experience
    • Proven experience in at least one programming language (PHP, JavaJSP, ASP, .NET).
    • 2+ years of solid experience in web architecture and technologies, such as IIS Apache, JavaScript, AJAX, jQuery, HTML5, and CSS
    • Experience in any web development framework, JIRA, Confluence, Subversion, and other related tools to implement best practices in documentation, test-driven development, continuous integration, and iterative development lifecycle
    • Experience in PL/SQL in any relational databases such as Oracle or MySQL
    • Demonstrated ability in system administration support (especially Linux Unix)
    • Experience in shell scripting PBS – high performance computer cluster grid
    • Ability to generate conclusion reports, present data in team meetings
    • Ability to navigate & design IT systems for efficient data managementAbility to work in multi-disciplinary teams, displaying excellent interpersonal skills
    • Good organisational & communication skills & the ability to liaise with scientists & external collaborators at all levels

    PREFERENCES

    • Prior experience developing scientific web applications visualization tools in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment
    • Ability to manage and process the data in Cloud computing
    • Ability to interact with other staff members with informatics skills to develop a state-of-the-art Next Generation Sequencing Portal
    • Hands on experience in analysing NGS data generated by multiple platforms, including Illumina.
