BACKGROUND

The Health Informatics Institute (HII) at the University of South Florida is seeking an Associate/Full Professor in Bioinformatics to fill a non-tenure earning position as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist. The Institute is NIH funded as a data coordinating center for several large clinical networks and actively participates in the design and conduct of epidemiological studies and clinical trials.

This position will conduct collaborative research and provide active support for ongoing Institute activities, especially the TEDDY type 1 diabetes study. Opportunities exist for collaborations in other NIH funded and privately funded type 1 diabetes research and disease prevention projects. The Institute works in partnership with experts in metabolomics, microbiome/vial metagenomics, gene expression, proteomics, SNPs, big data, and longitudinal repeated measure analytics. Priority consideration will be given to candidates with experience analyzing these types of high-dimensional data; however other areas of statistical application will be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include: developing, applying, and maintaining computational tools to support analysis conducted by colleagues without formal computational training; evaluating computational solutions, finding and addressing failure modes; working closely with epidemiologists and statisticians to conceive analytical and computational solutions that address project needs; analyzing large `omics datasets and providing analysis in formats accessible to a research community of epidemiologists and statisticians; following relevant scientific literature to ensure use of optimal methods and understand emerging practices across the field; contributing to reports and papers for presentation and publication, and presenting at scientific conferences as appropriate; regularly attending and presenting at team meetings to share results and plan projects and experiments. Opportunities exist for teaching and graduate student mentoring, if desired.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications: All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Biostatistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, Bioinformatics, Biology, or a related discipline, and have demonstrated experience designing computational methods and tools. The successful candidate is expected to have experience with and thorough understanding of statistical analysis and demonstrated productivity and leadership in his or her field. He or she should have demonstrated proficiency with technologies such as Perl, Python, Java, Matlab, R, C, C++, Unix, and/or SAS, and also have some familiarity with gene expression profile (microarray) data analysis. The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and salary will be based upon the University of South Florida pay scale. The incumbent must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
