OVERVIEW
SRA is seeking a Bioinformatics Developer to join its team in Atlanta working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to help design and implement systems that automate the discovery and identification of emergent and exotic pathogens for public health protection. Working as part of diverse and fast paced team of 12 bioinformatics and IT professionals, you will contribute to the development of algorithms and analysis pipelines and assist in the integration of those capabilities into broader public health software development efforts. The ideal Bioinformatics developer candidate will be a skilled professional with broad experience in bioinformatics, biology/microbiology and object oriented development. You should also possess strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (verbal and written) skills.RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working with the bioinformatics team develop algorithms, scripts, tools and pipelines for comparative analysis of genomic and phenotypic data.
- Work cross functionally with Agile teams to define and document software specifications for your own work products and work with other software engineers to integrate those specifications.
- Work with other software developers and bioinformatics staff to create, mature and integrate analytical tools/pipelines into user accessible tools/interfaces.
- Work with bioinformatics staff and often the end user to test the tools and iterate on the functionality.
- Advise software developers on scientific or bioinformatics concepts.
REQUIREMENTS
- Masters degree and 4 years or BA/BS degree and 6 years experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience); preferred degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, or other relevant discipline.
- 2+ years bioinformatics software development experience
- Demonstrated fluency in UNIX/Linux.
- Demonstrated programming/scripting ability in languages such as Perl/Python/Java/C++ and familiarity with principles of object oriented programming
- Experience in algorithm generation and/or computational methods implementation
- Familiarity with statistical/mathematical packages such as R/MATLAB
PREFERENCES
- PhD degree or MS degree preferred
- Experience with microbiology
- Strong communication skills and comfort working in a dynamic, fast paced environment
- Familiar with web service development
