Opportunity: Bioinformatician @ European Molecular Biology Laboratory -- Heidelberg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL Recruitment; posted on Thursday, July 03, 2014

    BACKGROUND

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

EMBL's Genomics Core Facility is looking for a Bioinformatician to support the analysis of next-generation sequencing data. The successful candidate will be involved in sequencing data analysis (mainly Illumina HiSeq / MiSeq / NextSeq) and data management tasks related to a multitude of exciting biological research projects, including cancer research, rare disease genetics and human population variation analyses. Primary focus is on processing large-scale DNA and RNA sequencing data sets by means of applying, modifying and developing software tools to strengthen the current analysis infrastructure of EMBL.

The main application areas are sequencing quality control, sequence alignment, gene expression analysis, genetic variant calling, DNA methylation analysis and sequence assembly in the context of various scientific research projects that are supported by the Genomics Core Facility and driven by EMBL research groups. Management of sequencing data processing pipelines, as well as quality control and analysis of generated sequencing data are the primary objectives of the position. The selected candidate will contribute to research projects as well as tutoring and teaching activities. The work will be carried out in an international, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative environment at the cutting edge of science with a range of possibilities to acquire new skills and techniques.

    REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for a university graduate with a degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or Computer Science who has a strong background and interest in computational data analysis, data management, a basic understanding of molecular genetics and genomic sequencing data. An educational background or practical knowledge in sequencing data analysis, statistics, advanced computer programming and/or algorithm engineering is an advantage. Experience with the Linux/Unix shell and one scripting language, such as Python, will be essential. Solid skills in a high level programming language such as Java or C++, knowledge of database technologies and SQL and some experience with R statistics will be considered an asset. Practical know-how in the areas of MS-SQL, IIS and coldfusion are appreciated. Strong communication skills as well as the ability to interact with other scientists and to work in an international and interdisciplinary team are essential.
