BACKGROUND
SRA is seeking a Software Engineer / Bioinformatics Programmer with experience in enterprise level Java development platforms such as: J2EE, EJB, Struts, Spring, or Hibernate; to provide scientific programming support to the NIH, NINDS Intramural program. You will collaborate with at least 2 other Developers on various projects, and independent work is expected as well. You will also have daily interactions with scientist and clinicians throughout the institute. The opportunity to attend and possibly present at scientific conferences is expected.RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interacting closely with other scientists, clinicians, and bioinformaticians to design and implement enhancements to existing bioinformatics software or create new research software.
- Implementing software by incorporating open source or commercial bioinformatics software into a robust framework into stand-alone pipelines, applications or websites.
- Utilizing iterative development cycles, incorporating large data sets (stored in databases or flat-files) and providing interactive informative visualizations to be used by biomedical researchers in their work.
REQUIREMENTS
- We are open to mid-level Software Engineers with a BS/BA degree and 3+ years experience or Senior Software Engineers with a BS/BA and 6+ years experience. Equivalent combination of experience and no degree or higher education will also be considered
- Experience in enterprise level Java development platforms such as: J2EE, EJB, Struts, Spring, Hibernate.
- Experience creating scientific research software, preferably in bioinformatics or neuro-imaging research, through iterative interaction with end-user scientists / clinicians and the incorporation of open source or commercial software into novel pipelines, applications or web-sites.
- Experience utilizing large datasets of DNA sequence, proteomics, image or other biological data, stored either in relational databases such as Oracle, MySQL and PostgreSQL or flat files.
PREFERENCES
- Experience implementing packages in R, S, or other statistical software packages is preferred
- Additional experience using C/C++ or .Net technologies is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills will be needed
- Experience presenting at scientific conferences is a plus
- Degree in computer science or similar discipline is preferred
