    OVERVIEW:
SRA is seeking a Lead Bioinformatics Scientist to manage a team of bioinformatics scientists and a molecular biologist for a Bioinformatics Core facility at the CDC. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled professional with significant experience in a breadth of current bioinformatics techniques including Next Generation (NGS) sequence analysis (e.g. Illumina, IonTorrent, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore), metagenomics, phylogeny, statistical analysis, and structural bioinformatics. He or she will also have performed scientific project management including managing laboratory and bioinformatics scientists, developing and managing to schedules, and providing reports and presentations for client engagements.
In this role, you will provide hands-on project management leadership and bioinformatics analytic support by leading a small team of skilled bioinformatics scientists and laboratory scientists focused on leveraging NGS capabilities to develop the next generation of surveillance and laboratory diagnostic tools used in the global fight against disease. Position is for full time employment with SRA and will be based onsite at CDC.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key responsibilities will involve you being hands on to perform as well as to technically mentor and lead a small team for the following:
    • Lead a team of bioinformatics scientists and NGS specialists to deliver new analytic processes and results to CDC scientists.
    • Work with CDC scientists and your team to create scientific project plans to provide staged delivery of analytic processes, pipelines, and results.
    • Maintain accurate and timely financial records for the project in collaboration with others and provide management of scientists in their career development.
    • Communicate to stakeholders statuses and issues related to project progress through personal communication, group meetings, and formal and ad hoc reporting.
    • Provide hands-on bioinformatics analysis and mentorship, including insights into biostatistics methods to evaluate large amounts of biological sequencing and comparative evolutionary data.
    • Lead the team in designing, building, and supporting cutting-edge pipelines for the analysis and interpretation of NGS data including sequence production, metagenomics, evolutionary genomics, variant calling, and interpretation.
    • Help in the selection and implementation of state-of-the-art computational methods, and developing innovative approaches to software challenges that touch all aspects of NGS data analysis.
    • Work with other team members to mature and integrate analytical tools/pipelines into user accessible tools/interfaces in UNIX/Linux and high performance computing environments.
    • Provide expertise in algorithm generation and statistical and computational methods for the analysis of complex, high-throughput biological data.
    • Participate in the presentation of scientific results to the community, both internal and external to CDC, including the publication and presentation of scientific results in peer reviewed publications.
    • Ensure software adheres to appropriate government and regulatory compliance requirements.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or Computational Biology or other relevant discipline preferred and 7-10+ years' experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • 2+ years' experience in managing bioinformatics programs, including scheduling and reporting.
    • 7-10+ years hand-on experience performing bioinformatics analysis in collaboration with other scientists.
    • Demonstrated fluency in UNIX/Linux computing environments
    • Demonstrated programming and/or scripting experience in languages such as Perl, Python, and/or Java.
    • Experience in pipeline generation and/or computational methods implementation.
    PREFERENCES:
    • Experience with High Performance Computing environments
    • Strong experience with statistical/ mathematical packages such as SAS/R/MATLAB
    • 3+ years' experience in data analysis with multiple Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies such as Illumina, IonTorrent, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore.
    • Demonstrated skills in client negotiation and facilitating interactions.
