OVERVIEW
SRA is seeking a Scientific Programmer with experience in designing, developing and maintaining scientific research databases used to store and distribute scientific data and metadata, either in structured databases, NoSQL, or file systems. The ideal candidate will have experience beyond their degree work (in academic, commercial, or government environments) in designing, developing, and maintaining databases for molecular data and associated metadata using technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MS SQL Server, and Access. The successful candidate will closely interact with other scientists on the team and at CDC in understanding the data, workflows, and uses of the data.
In this role, you will be designing and implementing the creation of new or existing databases for laboratory and epidemiologic data, as well as migrating data from pre-existing databases. Participation in the development of project schedule and data management plans to store and migrate data accurately and on time will be done. Development of specific software to store, migrate, or utilize the data will be done using technologies such as Python, Perl, Java, and MS .Net.
Position is for full time employment with SRA and will be based in our client site in Atlanta at the CDC, working Monday through Friday.RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities will involve designing and implementing research databases for use in a high demand scientific environment:- Communicating with scientists and IT specialists to understand the data and how it will be used in public health research.
- Performing data modeling to recommend the best methods and technologies to receive, store, and distribute the data.
- Developing project plans, with a project manager, to design, create, and test new databases and effectively migrate existing data into the new database formats.
- Working with other team members and other CDC or public health scientists to ensure that the databases are effective in handling and distributing the data, modifying as necessary.
- Documenting the design and development of the databases, and reporting on the progress and performance of the software
- Being a key liaison between other IT organizations to ensure that proper government procedures are followed in the design, development, and maintenance of the software developed and supported by this project.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related fields.
- Hands-on experience developing databases for scientific applications
- Strong knowledge of SQL and its application in databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, MS SQL, and Access.
- Experience in the Agile development of enterprise software, utilizing languages such as Java, Python, or Perl.
- Strong experience in Linux/Unix environments.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills in a team environment.
PREFERENCES
- Experience in bioinformatics, specifically Next Generation Sequence data storage.
- Experience with creating Web services.
- Experience with NoSQL databases.
- Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
- Experience with C# is a plus.
