Opportunity: Principal Scientist, Computational Biology @ CITRE -- Sevilla, Spain
Submitted by Matthew Trotter; posted on Friday, August 22, 2014
BACKGROUND
Owing to expansion of the CITRE Computational Research group, we seek a talented and progressive inter-disciplinary scientist to lead work on the computational analysis of high-dimensional tissue, cell and molecular profiling data.
The group provides a point of reference for use of innovative computational analysis strategies within Celgene Corporation, and delivers output that drives key decision-making in some of our most challenging and complex scientific objectives, involving data from real patients to improve therapeutic outcomes in complex diseases of unmet medical need.
Applications range from providing deep insight into therapeutic mechanisms of action for both existing and novel therapies, to the identification and prediction of patient phenotypes associated with response to therapy. Analysis scenarios involve data from transcriptomic, proteomic, genomic, epigenomic and wider cell-molecular profiling platforms.
The position would suit an individual with substantial post-doctoral research experience and strong leadership potential. Those looking to bridge the gap between academic and industrial research environments are encouraged, with several external research collaborations underway involving European academic institutions.
A strong interest in the inter-disciplinary application of computational analysis methods to life sciences data is imperative. Present themes of interest include data combination to infer perturbed biological mechanisms, network-based machine learning, and interpretation of epigenetic profiling data in both disease and therapeutic contexts.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the CITRE Principal Investigator, Computational Biology, and working in collaboration with computational, biological and clinical scientists across the Celgene Research and Early Development organization, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform and supervise leading computational biology research in pursuit of key Celgene scientific objectives, including line management and development of junior staff.
- Collaborate with research colleagues in Spain and the US to investigate compound and disease properties and influence decision-making across the drug development process from compound discovery through translational development.
- Develop and implement novel computational analysis and biological interpretation methods for application to Celgene-derived and external sources of high-dimensional assay data.
- Participate in and oversee scientific report writing. Present and report methods, results and conclusions to a publishable standard, both internally and outside the company where required.
- Integrate data across multiple experimental platforms and drive transfer of knowledge from pre-clinical experiments to clinical trials. Contribute to development of integrated knowledge collections that encapsulate key findings.
- Participate in the planning and execution of collaborative projects with leading academic research groups in Spain and Europe.
REQUIREMENTS
- A Ph.D. in computational biology, computer science, or related field from a recognized higher-education establishment; 5+ years relevant post-doctoral experience of inter-disciplinary computational biology research, in an academic or scientific research scenario.
- Expertise in statistical programming and data manipulation, using e.g. R/Bioconductor, Matlab, Python. Good knowledge of contemporary database structures to enable integration and advanced query of diverse experimental data sources.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publication, grant-writing and successful funding from national agencies; Previous experience of research supervision.
- Proven problem-solving skills, collaborative nature and adaptability across disciplines; An inter-disciplinary background involving Oncology and/or Translational Research in a university or hospital research environment would be desirable.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluent verbal and written English language skills prerequisite. Proficient verbal and written Spanish language skills would be advantageous.
