BACKGROUND

This position is part of the project "CodeAge - Chronic DNA damage in Ageing", funded by the EU FP7-PEOPLE-2010-ITN, Marie Curie Initial Training Networks.

Ageing is an inexorable homeostatic failure of largely unknown aetiology that leads to increased vulnerability to disease limiting the quality of life in the elderly and creating high costs to the society. The CodeAge ITN proposes an integrated approach in studying the role of Chronic DNA damage in Ageing and age-related pathology.

ATLAS Biolabs GmbH is a leading provider of complex analyses in molecular genetics, including microarray-based genomic services, targeted sequence capture and next generation sequencing in Europe. The company provides access to the next generation sequencing and microarray platforms of all leading suppliers in this field (Affymetrix, Agilent, Illumina and Roche NimbleGen). RESPONSIBILITIES

Scope of the work package addressed by ATLAS Biolabs, is to develop new tools for next generation sequencing data analysis to reveal the links between pathways, biomarkers and age-related diseases. The successful candidate will (i) evaluate existing tools and data provided by the partners and develop new strategies and bioinformatics tools. (ii) Apply selected tools and heuristics to process and analyze the data of the partners, and (iii) determine and classify age-related biomarkers and pathways.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants in the first 4 years of their research careers must hold a MSc. or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or related disciplines. They must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment. An excellent background in biology and molecular biology is required as well as substantial experience in programming (Bioconductor R, Perl, and Java), including experience in software development. Abilities for web development and database maintenance (CGI, SQL) will be considered as a plus. The ability to communicate clearly and share technical knowledge with other researchers is crucial. Proficiency in English is mandatory.
